Why does my vape taste burnt? In almost every case the coil is heating wick cotton that is not soaked with e-liquid. That happens when a new coil was not primed, when the pod is low, when you take puffs too close together, or when the coil is simply worn out. A burnt taste is not a fault with the flavour itself. Fix the cause and the taste goes back to normal, unless the cotton is already scorched, in which case only a new coil or pod will cure it.
The five usual causes
| Cause | What you notice | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| New coil not primed | Burnt from the very first puffs | Replace the coil or pod, then prime it properly |
| Pod running low | Taste fades, then turns harsh | Refill before the liquid drops below the wick holes |
| Chain vaping | Fine at first, burnt after several quick puffs | Leave a few seconds between puffs |
| Coil worn out | Muted flavour that slowly turns bitter | Swap in a new coil or pod |
| Power too high | Hot, dry, sharp hit on adjustable kits | Lower the wattage to the coil's rated range |
A dry wick: the root of most burnt hits
Inside every coil is a strip of cotton that draws e-liquid onto the heating wire. When you puff, the wire heats and turns the soaked cotton into vapour. If the cotton has dried out, even for a moment, the wire heats the cotton instead of the liquid. That is the dry hit: a harsh, scorched taste that most vapers recognise straight away.
Dry wicks have a few causes. The pod may be low, so liquid no longer reaches the wick holes. You may be taking long puffs back to back, faster than the cotton can soak back up. Or a fresh coil went in without time for the cotton to saturate. Of all the reasons people give for a vape taste that suddenly turns burnt, these three cover most of them.
When the coil is simply finished
Coils wear out. Sweetened e-liquids leave residue on the wire, often called gunk, and over time the flavour gets flatter and darker before it turns properly burnt. If you have ruled out a low pod and you are not chain vaping, a burnt coil is the most likely answer. There is no reliable way to clean a pod coil back to new, so the fix is a fresh coil or a new pod.
How long a coil lasts depends on the liquid and on how much you vape. Very sweet flavours, the sort found across the Elux Legend and Elfliq ranges, tend to shorten coil life compared with plainer flavours. That is normal, not a sign of a bad batch.
Wattage on adjustable kits
Most pod kits set the power automatically. If yours lets you adjust the wattage, check the range printed on the coil or pod. Running above it heats the wire faster than the wick can keep up, and you get a burnt hit even with a full pod. Turn it down to the middle of the rated range and build up slowly.
Is it the liquid?
Occasionally the e-liquid is the issue. A liquid that is too thick for a small pod coil wicks slowly, which causes dry hits. Nic salts are usually 50/50 PG to VG precisely because that ratio wicks well in pod coils. If you are using a thick, high-VG liquid in a pod kit, our PG/VG ratio guide explains why it might be catching.
How to stop it happening again
- Prime every new coil or pod and wait before the first puff.
- Refill before the liquid drops below the wick holes. Our refilling guide covers the steps.
- Take slow, gentle draws and leave a few seconds between them.
- Keep a spare pod or coil so you are never tempted to push a dying one.
- On adjustable kits, stay inside the coil's rated wattage.
Once the cotton is scorched, the burnt taste stays. Topping up the pod will not bring a burnt coil back, so replace it rather than putting up with it.
Burnt, or just a different off-taste?
Not every bad puff is a burnt one, and the fix depends on which you have. A burnt hit is sharp, dry and smoky, and it usually arrives suddenly. A worn coil tastes flat and slightly dark, and it creeps in over a few days. A gurgling, spitty puff with a weak flavour is the opposite problem: too much liquid, not too little, and a gentle blow through the mouthpiece into a tissue usually clears it.
If the taste is fine on one bottle and odd on another, the liquid may simply have aged. Our guide to how long a 10ml nic salt lasts covers storage and best-before dates.
Checking a pod for a scorched wick
On many pods you can see the cotton through the wick holes, or through the side of a clear pod. Fresh, soaked cotton looks evenly wet and takes on the colour of the liquid. A scorched wick shows brown or black patches near the coil. If you can see dark spots, the pod is finished. If the cotton looks pale and dry, the pod may just need refilling and time to soak before you try it again.
Questions readers ask
Why does my new vape coil taste burnt?
The cotton was not fully soaked before the first puff. Replace it and prime the new coil before you use it.
Can you fix a burnt coil?
Not reliably. Once the wick is scorched, the taste stays. Fit a new coil or pod.
Why does my vape taste burnt when it is full?
Either the coil is worn out, it was not primed, or the power is set too high for the coil.
What is a dry hit?
A harsh, scorched puff caused by the coil heating cotton that has run out of e-liquid.
Does the e-liquid affect how fast coils burn?
Yes. Very sweet liquids leave more residue on the coil, so it wears out sooner.
